About this venue

Twin Peaks Tavern didn't just witness queer history; it actively created it. In 1972, long before visibility was safe, two revolutionary lesbian owners did something completely radical: they took the dark coverings off the bar’s massive plate-glass windows. By letting the outside world look in and patrons look out, it became the nation's very first open-window gay bar, a defiant act that earned it official San Francisco Historic Landmark status. Affectionately nicknamed "The Glass Coffin" or "Tomb with a View" due to its generations of fiercely loyal elder patrons, this cozy, two-story tavern features a gorgeous Prohibition-era mirrored backbar and zero thumping club music, keeping the sacred art of queer conversation alive.

Venue intelligence

Know before you go

Typical queue

Virtually zero wait time to enter, though finding a coveted window seat or grabbing a drink at the counter can require some strategic maneuvering when the post-work happy hour crowd hits.

Best night

Late weekend afternoons (Saturdays and Sundays) to grab a premium window or mezzanine seat, sip on their signature hot Bushmills Irish Coffees, and watch the colorful Castro streets buzz to life outside.

Locals vs visitors

A deeply cherished, multi-generational hub heavily anchored by neighborhood queer elders, local historians, casual daytime conversationalists, and reverent LGBTQ+ tourists paying homage to their roots.

Dress code in practice

Completely casual. Come in everyday neighborhood gear, flannels, warm jackets, or casual denim. Note: Keep some cash on hand, as the bar traditionally operates on a cash-only basis at the counter.

Staff inclusion

Exceptionally warm, respectful, and classic. The long-time bartenders are legendary for pouring remarkably stiff, traditional cocktails and welcoming travelers with old-school hospitality.
