Venue Detail
Smartbar
About this venue
Smartbar is Chicago’s world-renowned basement sanctuary for underground dance music. While it isn't a "gay bar" in the traditional sense, it is one of the most vital queer spaces in the city, carrying the torch for Chicago’s house music legacy with a "no-frills, all-dancing" attitude. The Queer Vibe: Industrial & Intimate: Located in a dark, subterranean space beneath the Metro, the aesthetic is simple and focused on the music, featuring an elite Funktion One sound system and a classic disco ball. Radical Inclusivity: The crowd is famously diverse, welcoming club kids, house heads, and anyone who respects the dance floor. It is a designated transgender safe space and features gender-neutral restrooms. The Crown Jewel: Queen! Every Sunday night, this legendary party transforms the club into a queer mecca of house and disco, hosted by icons like Lucy Stoole and featuring residents like Derrick Carter and Michael Serafini.

Venue intelligence
Know before you go
Typical queue
Smartbar is generally a walk-in bar rather than a velvet-rope queue. The trade-off for arriving late is a fuller room and slower service, especially on event nights.
Best night
Sunday is the standout: live music gives Smartbar its most distinctive weekly atmosphere. Go earlier if you want more room before the peak.
Locals vs visitors
Smartbar feels local first—a broadly queer crowd and trans and non-binary guests, familiar faces and neighbourhood regulars. Bigger events broaden the room, but it is not built as a tourist-only stop.
Dress code in practice
Relaxed, expressive barwear works at Smartbar. There is no need to over-style it unless a show or themed night says otherwise.
Staff inclusion
Smartbar is explicitly organised around openness, consent or respect. In practice, that gives the team a clear inclusion standard from the door through the main space.
