Venue Detail
Cubbyhole
About this venue
Cubbyhole in the West Village is a legendary New York institution, celebrated as one of the city's few remaining lesbian bars. Founded in 1994, it has evolved into a "friendly neighborhood bar for all," serving as a second living room for the queer community. Chaotic & Colorful: The bar is famous for its maximalist decor, with "layer upon layer of junk" hanging from the ceiling, including Chinese lanterns, model airplanes, and disco balls. Intimate & Packed: Living up to its name, the space is tiny and often wall-to-wall with a diverse crowd. It has no dance floor, focusing instead on social mingling and singing along to jukebox hits. Welcoming Ethos: While primarily a lesbian bar, it is fiercely inclusive of all genders and sexualities, maintaining a strict policy against any form of discrimination.

Venue intelligence
Know before you go
Typical queue
Cubbyhole is more likely to bottleneck inside than form a formal club line: the compact room fills fast, and late arrivals may wait for space or slow bar service.
Best night
Friday and Saturday bring the louder, later version of Cubbyhole. Go earlier in the week when you want the bar before it becomes a full social scrum.
Locals vs visitors
Cubbyhole feels local first—a broadly queer crowd, lesbian and sapphic guests, and the bear community, familiar faces and neighbourhood regulars. Bigger events broaden the room, but it is not built as a tourist-only stop.
Dress code in practice
Relaxed, expressive barwear works at Cubbyhole. There is no need to over-style it unless a show or themed night says otherwise.
Staff inclusion
The clearest first-hand signal is friendly: a detailed account specifically praises the welcome or service at Cubbyhole.
