Café Saarein is one of Amsterdam's most treasured, historic, and emotionally significant queer landmarks. Nestled inside a beautiful, traditional 17th-century building in the Jordaan district, it was taken over in 1978 by a collective of ten radical feminist women who turned it into a pioneering, exclusive safe haven for women and lesbians. Today, it stands proudly as a vital transgender-safe space and an inclusive queer sanctuary managed under the guiding motto: "For queer women and their friends."
