About this venue

Welcome to the absolute epicenter of Kyoto’s sonic counter-culture. Operating continuously since 1990, Club Metro is a literal and creative underground sanctuary, tucked neatly into a subway station basement. It’s a beautifully raw, intimate time capsule where Kyoto's music snobs, artsy weirdos, and queer community intertwine under spinning disco balls. While it runs avant-garde techno, jazz, and indie nights through the week, the venue truly transcends boundaries when it transforms for "Diamonds Are Forever"—Kyoto's legendary, long-running monthly drag and queer extravaganza. It’s smoky, bass-heavy, unpretentious, and effortlessly cool.

Venue intelligence

Know before you go

Typical queue

Generally fast entry on weekdays. On peak weekend nights or special queer events like Diamonds Are Forever, wait times at the basement steps can hit 15–30 minutes if you arrive right at peak hours.

Best night

Drop in around 11:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays to catch the dance floor heating up, or check event doors early for live experimental sessions.

Locals vs visitors

A beautiful cocktail of local vinyl collectors, forward-thinking fashion students, global backpackers, drag enthusiasts, and the core Kansai LGBTQ+ community.

Dress code in practice

Incredibly relaxed. Leave the stiff corporate wear behind. The style is heavily fashion-conscious but deeply casual—think baggy streetwear, club gear, or event-themed looks. Just wear safe, comfortable shoes for the packed concrete dancefloor.

Staff inclusion

Highly commendable. Because they have anchored Kyoto’s queer nightlife for decades through intentional programming, the staff is exceptionally welcoming, respectful, and accustomed to a totally diverse crowd.
