Johannesburg has one of Africa's most significant queer histories and one of its most dispersed contemporary scenes. Constitutional protection, Pride organizing, Black queer activism, nightlife, archives and adult venues all matter here, but they do not sit inside one neat tourism district.

Melville is the easiest nightlife start, with Ratz and Liquid Blue close together. Illovo holds Babylon, while Rosebank and Oxford Parks provide strong hotel and restaurant infrastructure. Braamfontein and New Doornfontein matter for Kitchener's, GALA, Tennis Club and The Factory; Randburg holds The Rec Room.
