About this venue

Welcome to the undisputed, legendary matriarch of Frankfurt's gay scene. In business since 1987, Zum Schwejk is the city’s oldest surviving gay bar—and it behaves like a beautifully eccentric, campy German aunt. This place brings the words "over" and "decorated" to complete shame. The interior is a glorious temple of high kitsch, with the staff completely overhauling the ceiling decorations monthly—expect an explosion of horror props for Halloween, massive balloon arrays, or a Christmas winter wonderland that will make your jaw drop.

Venue intelligence

Know before you go

Typical queue

During early afternoon openings or mid-week hours, you can walk right in or sit at their summer outdoor terrace.

Best night

Friday and Saturday nights are an absolute stampede of high-energy partying. Thursday night also draws a surprisingly heavy, lively pre-weekend crowd of local regulars.

Locals vs visitors

A wonderfully diverse, multi-generational, and lively mix.

Dress code in practice

Completely casual and street-friendly. From basic t-shirts and jeans to colorful party outfits, anything goes—just keep in mind your clothes will smell like cigarette smoke by midnight.

Staff inclusion

Generally incredibly fast, highly attentive, and deeply protective of the bar's unique heritage. The bartenders keep a sharp eye on your running drink tab and pour classic cold beers and local Apfelwein (Frankfurt apple wine) at lightning speeds.
