Venue Detail
The Regent Bar
About this venue
Affectionately calling itself "Edinburgh's LGBT+ & Straight-Friendly Real Ale Pub", The Regent completely rejects the standard, high-decibel gay bar template. Operating since 2003 on the edge of Calton Hill, it is designed to feel like stepping into a cozy, eccentric neighborhood living room complete with mismatched pink leather furniture, a vintage gymnastics pommel horse, and large, comfy sofas. Celebrated multiple times as a CAMRA Pub of the Year finalist, it keeps its background music low (playing anything from ABBA to classical Dvořák) explicitly to foster great conversation over award-winning local cask ales.

Venue intelligence
Know before you go
Typical queue
Zero at the door, as it functions like a relaxed local public house. However, tables fill up fast, so you may need to squeeze onto a shared couch or book ahead mid-week.
Best night
The second Saturday of every month from 9:00 PM onwards, when the venue hosts the massively popular, packed Bear Social managed by the BearScots community.
Locals vs visitors
A distinctively mature, friendly, and laid-back crowd.
Dress code in practice
Completely casual neighborhood pub wear. While leather and themed gear are highly visible during monthly socials, jeans, hoodies, and sneakers are the daily norm.
Staff inclusion
Superb. Landlord Alan and his team are locally famous for their legendary, zero-attitude hospitality that instantly makes tourists feel like lifelong regulars.
