Cairo's queer life is real, inventive and deliberately hard to map. There is no public gay district, no safely advertised queer club and no honest reason to turn a mixed hotel bar into one. Community moves through private trust, art, cinema, music and organisations such as Bedayaa and Cairo 52. For visitors, the useful public atlas is therefore a careful set of mixed rooms: Zawya for independent film, Townhouse for contemporary art, ROOM for performance and Cairo Jazz Club for a programmed night. These are not guarantees of queer safety; they are places where creative Cairo becomes easier to read without exposing the people who sustain it.

Districts
Zamalek is the softest first base, with Harry's inside the Marriott and Pub 28 among restaurants, embassies and island streets. Across the Nile, Agouza holds Cairo Jazz Club; Garden City adds ROOM Art Space; Downtown links Zawya, Townhouse, Rawabet and the older cultural core. New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed have polished nightlife, but they sit far outside this central route. Traffic can turn a short map line into an hour, so build one cluster per outing and use a reputable direct ride rather than improvising between distant districts after midnight.

Egypt does not name consensual same-sex intimacy as a standalone crime, but authorities use debauchery, public-morality and cybercrime provisions against LGBTQ+ people. Police entrapment through dating apps and social media is documented, rainbow flags have led to arrest, same-sex relationships have no legal recognition and public acceptance is low. Avoid public affection, do not seek private parties through strangers, keep sexual conversation and images off local digital channels, and never photograph or identify queer Egyptians without consent. Bedayaa and Cairo 52 provide confidential legal routes; call 122 for police emergencies only while understanding that LGBTQ+ people have also reported police abuse.

Treat Cairo as a music-and-culture city, not a gay bar crawl. Cairo Jazz Club has the strongest recurring club calendar but requires reservations, hard-copy ID, mixed groups, age 23+, non-sportswear and acceptance of selective entry. Harry's is an easier hotel-pub evening; Pub 28 is older, smoky and conversational. ROOM works for karaoke, live music and small performance; Zawya and Townhouse suit a low-pressure cultural night. No public gay sauna, cruise club, lesbian bar or permanent queer party could be verified safely. Do not interpret a rainbow directory listing as protection from surveillance or venue policy.

Cost
Cairo can be affordable for coffee, cinema, galleries and ordinary rides, but nightlife pricing splits sharply. Zawya and Townhouse offer strong cultural value; ROOM adds a ticket and minimum order; international hotels and Cairo Jazz Club cost considerably more. Traffic is the hidden expense, especially between central Cairo, New Cairo, Sheikh Zayed and Giza. Stay in Zamalek, Garden City or Downtown for the first visit, carry a payment backup, confirm the full door charge before ordering and keep enough battery and cash for a direct ride home.
